MacRobbie Takes Over at Arizona State

November 4th, 2015 General News | Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University Men's Lacrosse today announced that ToddMacRobbie has been named as the new head coach. MacRobbie, a long-time assistant takes over immediately after the resignation of Joseph Thon.

“We feel that Todd is best equipped to maintain and elevate the tradition of lacrosse and academic excellence that has been established in Tempe. Coach MacRobbie has been a part of that tradition as a player and trusted assistant, and we’re confident he’ll continue fostering an environment that allows young men the chance to pursue a national championship and attain a world-class education,” said Colleen Hayes, the team’s general manager and former faculty advisor.

“We also would like to thank Joseph Thon for the energy and dedication he brought to the position and wish him success in his future endeavors,” added Hayes.

MacRobbie, a native of Sloatsburg, N.Y., graduated from ASU in 1996 with B.S. in Exercise Science and Athletic Training, where he also was a four year starter for the team at attack. He has spent the last 14 years as a teacher in the Higley Unified School District and the head program director of Gilbert High School’s lacrosse team. MacRobbie was also the top defensive assistant for five seasons under Thon’s predecessor Chris Malone before transitioning to offense under Thon.

Jim Mirabito, alumnus, former assistant coach and member of the board of directors seconded Hayes’ sentiments on MacRobbie.

“I’ve known Todd as both a friend and in a professional capacity for almost 25 years,” said Mirabito. “I have seen firsthand how his aggressive play on the field and his dedication to the program and University has helped elevate the stature of men’s lacrosse within the school, the MCLA and nationwide.”

“Arizona State University and the opportunities and experiences the school provided me here as a player and coach have helped shape me as an educator, coach and father. I’ve been blessed and honored to be part of the lacrosse family here for more than half of my life,” said MacRobbie. “This is something I’ve dreamed about and I’m humbled and excited to be able to help provide the same chances to these fine young men that I was able to take advantage of.”

The 2015 Sun Devils posted a record of 13-4 in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference of Division-I of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association, and finished the season as the number five ranked team in the Under Armour MCLA Coaches Poll. The Devils were two goals away from clinching their
sixth consecutive Final Four, falling to Virginia Tech 10-9 in the second round of the national tournament.
