GCU’s Hamwey Has D-I Top Performance

GCU’s Hamwey Has D-I Top Performance

March 29th, 2016 General News | Cal Poly | Chapman | Grand Canyon | Texas State | Florida

ATLANTA – With a dominating performance at the faceoff dot against one of the best teams in the country, Grand Canyon graduate student Ron Hamwey earned MCLA Division I Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour for the period ending March 27.

In a road contest with No. 3 Brigham Young on Friday night, Hamwey won 12-of-16 faceoffs, helping the Lopes keep a steady stream of possession in the 12-4 upset of the Cougars. The two teams were tied at four at halftime, but with Hamwey ruling the stripe, Grand Canyon outscored BYU 8-0 in the second half.

“I'm really proud of what Ron has done this year,” said Grand Canyon coach Manny Rapkin. “He had a rough stretch adjusting to a full-time job, full-time graduate school and a nagging injury. He has been a difference-maker in this three-game win streak.”

For his efforts in earning the Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour, Hamwey will receive a new Under Armour Command Head. Under Armour is the proud sponsor of the MCLA.

UNDER ARMOUR HONOR ROLL

Dylan Garner, Soph., Chapman – The top-ranked Panthers swept Oregon and Oregon State this weekend on the road thanks to a combined 13 points from Garner (8g, 5a).

A.J. Guralas, Fr., Cal Poly – The Mustangs beat No. 18 Sonoma State, thanks to four goals and two assists from Guralas, including the game-winner with 13 ticks left. Added five points (4g, 1a) against Dominican, too.

Alex Triay, Sr., Florida – With a bid to the SELC tournament on the line, Triay made 10 saves in the Gators 10-0 shutout of rival Miami (Fla.).

Blake Weir, Jr, Texas State – The Bobcats held off Oklahoma for an 11-7 win thanks to the Limestone transfer. Weir went 17-of-18 on faceoffs and even scored his first MCLA goal.
