Cal Poly Sweeps WCLL

Cal Poly Sweeps WCLL

April 25th, 2016 General News | Cal Poly | Nevada

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Cailf. -- Cal Poly finished its WCLL regular season campaign with a victory over a tenacious Nevada-Reno outfit, 18-3 on Saturday afternoon. The first made the Mustangs a perfect 7-0 in league play and improved them to 12-1 overall.

With several Mustang players nursing minor injuries, Cal Poly again exhibited it’s depth with eight players tallying points. The offense was highlighted by Matthew Paul (6g, 2a), John Corbolotti (3g, 4a) and Matt Fagan (2g, 2a). Austin Lord again dominated at the faceoff X, winning 13-of-15 on the day.

The defense was the star of the day, allowing only seven shots on goal all day.

“It was nice to end the regular season with a convincing league win over a young, scrappy Nevada team," said Cal Poly coach Bobby Dabrieo. "We dominated the faceoffs and our defense forced many turnovers, which led to numerous transition goals. That’s been our team’s identity all spring. Hopefully that continues into the postseason.”

Cal Poly moves into the WCLL tournament as the No. 1 seed and has a rematch against No. 23 Sonoma State in the semifinals. The Mustangs edged the Seawolves, 11-9, on March 26 in a thriller. The WCLL tournament features four Top 25 teams competing for the automatic qualifier to the 2016 MCLA National Championships powered by Under Armour..
