Georgia Tech Captures SELC Crown

Georgia Tech Captures SELC Crown

April 24th, 2016 General News | Georgia Tech | Virginia Tech

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – With another dominating defensive performance, second-ranked Georgia Tech rolled to a victory over Virginia Tech, 12-5, winning the SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Division I championship on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets (14-0) automatically qualify for the 2016 MCLA National Championships powered by Under Armour. The nationals will be held from May 9-14 in Orange County, Calif. The brackets will be announced on the evening of Sunday, May 1.

The contest opened up as a grinder with Georgia Tech holding just a 3-2 advantage over Virginia Tech (11-6) after the first 30 minutes of action. The Hokies opened the second half with a goal to tie the game, and it was still knotted at four midway through the third period.

Bridging the third and fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets went on a five-goal march to take a 9-5 lead with just six minutes left in the contest. With Virginia Tech in desperation mode, the Wreck pocketed three more for the 12-5 final. Freshman Tim Peterson had four goals in the second half to lead the charge.

Virginia Tech is still in the at-large hunt for a bid to nationals, but will have to wait until Selection Sunday to find out its fate.
