Carney, Fairey Earn USL Players of Month

May 18th, 2016 General News | Boston College | Montana State

ATLANTA – Boston College sophomore faceoff specialist Griffin Carney and Montana State senior goalie Parker Fairey have been named the US Lacrosse MCLA Players of the Month for April in Division I and II, respectively.

Boston College posted a 7-1 record in April, solidifying itself as the No. 6 seed at the 2016 MCLA National Championships powered by Under Armour and Griffin was a key reason why. In those eight games, Carney won 92 of his 166 faceoff attempts for a staggering 79.3 winning percentage.
The Brick, N.J., native’s most dominant performance came in the PCLL semifinals where he won 16-of-17 draws in a 19-8 rout of Buffalo.

“Griffin has done everything we have asked of him since stepping on campus last year,” said BC coach Peter Sessa. “This off-season, his serious dedication to weights and nutrition has played a big key to his on the field success.

“Griffin is a team guy first and would be the first to tell you that T.J. Zegeralli and Jack Kessler played a major factor in his development over the last two years. Those three have been with each other every step of the way and I am proud of the overall unit’s success this entire year and the icing on the cake was the run Griffin Carney went on this April. Griffin has earned every single one his awards this year, and we are proud of him from the top down.”

Fairey helped Montana State to a perfect 6-0 mark in the month of April with inspired goalie play. In the six games he had 75 saves for 65.2 overall save percentage. In addition, the Bobcats allowed just 6.67 goals per game in that stretch.

In the championship game of the RMLC tournament against Metro State with a berth to nationals on the line, Fairey made 14 saves and allowed just three goals in a 10-3 triumph. The Morristown, N.J., product blanked Metro State for the final 36 minutes of the game.

“Parker is the best goalie I have seen,” said Montana State coach Chris Kelley. “His outstanding play in April is the reason we were able to be successful in the postseason. His athleticism and leadership changes games and he has really made his mark on this program. Knowing that he was in cage was reassuring to the team and is always fun to watch.

“He has really matured over the years and helped put Montana State lacrosse on the map. This season, Parker posted 14 quarters of shutout play and 10 games with double digit saves. Parker has always had our backs and will be sorely missed on the field.”

For their efforts, both Carney and Fairey will receive a one-year membership to US Lacrosse, the national governing body of the sport. Membership includes on-the-field insurance coverage, discounted tickets and apparel along with a subscription to Lacrosse Magazine.
