BYU Participating in Charity Walk

BYU Participating in Charity Walk

September 20th, 2016 General News | BYU

PROVO, Utah -- The Brigham Young University’s men’s lacrosse team will again join with local leaders and community members for the third consecutive year as a part of the Salt Lake City CureSearch Walk. The fundraising event to support life-saving children’s cancer research takes place Sept. 24 at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City.

The day will include music, food and fun activities with the aim of honorably celebrating children from the region affected by cancer. BYU men's lacrosse is proud to have raised more than $20,000 for CureSearch during the past three years.

BYU Lacrosse player Harrison Wardle formed Team Madeleine/Team Claire with David and Mary Driggs of Salt Lake City in support of their daughter, Claire, and Madeleine Martineau, who resides in London. Both young women are currently in treatment for leukemia. Harrison became acquainted with Martineau while serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Wardle and his companion, Tyman Weiler, son of Utah State Senator Todd Weiler, were able to connect the two young women living on different sides of the Atlantic as part of a pilot program for LDS missionaries to use digital devices and social media platforms.

“I am grateful that my mom is a cancer survivor and I just wanted to do something to show support for Claire and Madeleine," Wardle said. "BYU Lacrosse has a tradition of community service so it seemed like a good fit.”

BYU Lacrosse will walk with Team Madeline/Team Claire alongside leaders of Brigham Young University, Utah County and the state of Utah. BYU coach Matt Schneck will join his team as part of the CureSearch walk. Senator Weiler and his family will also participate with Team Madeleine/Team Claire.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. and donation information to support Team Madeleine/Team Claire for the CureSearch Walk can be found HERE.

BYU Lacrosse players commit themselves to serving others in addition to a tradition of excelling on the playing field and in the classroom. For more information about the four-time National Champion BYU men's lacrosse, like them on Facebook and follow the team on Twitter

CureSearch for Children’s Cancer
For more than 25 years, CureSearch has been a leader in funding children’s cancer research. CureSearch will accelerate the cure for children’s cancer by driving innovation, eliminating research barriers, and solving the field’s most intractable problems.
CureSearch focuses on driving targeted and innovative research with measureable results in an accelerated time frame. To that end, CureSearch supports clinical trials that result from our Acceleration Initiative research projects, as well as those funded through our CureSearch Community Impact Awards (CCIA). All CureSearch supported research is required to report measureable results, milestones and achievements regularly. We evaluate our research rigorously with a focus on the ultimate goal: more cures for more children across more cancer types.
