Strong Finish Lifts BYU over UVU

Strong Finish Lifts BYU over UVU

April 21st, 2017 General News | BYU | Utah Valley

PROVO, Utah -- After being stymied in the first half, Brigham Young got things rolling in the third quarter to beat Utah Valley, 15-6 on Wednesday evening.

Inspired play by BYU goalie Mason Moon, the Cougars kept the game within reach until the offense kicked it into gear in the second half.

In the first quarter, UVU played like they had nothing to lose, scoring a pair of goals to counter the one from Connor Bernal for a 2-1 edge. The Cougars had several turnovers that allowed the Wolverines to control the time of possession in the first quarter as well as the scoreboard.

In the second quarter, Winston Farley finally got the Cougar attack moving with an early goal. He was followed by Harry Waddoups and Zach Labrum, while UVU’s only goal of the quarter occurred in transition after a turnover.

Cougar defenders Harrison Wardle and Rick Rose were key in keeping the Wolverines out of the goal. BYU had a slim lead, 4-3, at halftime.

After the break, BYU found its offensive rhythm and it was all Cougars in the third quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 6-0. Farley started the Cougs off with two goals followed by one from Josh Tunick and two from Bernal.

Cougar defender Boston Handley made an epic steal that resulted in Farley’s third goal of the quarter, giving BYU a 10-3 advantage at that point.

In the fourth, many of the Cougar reserves got in on the action and continued their run with goals from Bernal, Tunick, Brandon Royse, Michael Perry and Dallen Bentley for the 15-6 final.

Farley and Bernal had break-out games with 4 goals each.

The Cougars will host 10th-ranked Utah on Saturday night at 7 p.m. on the BYU Lacrosse Fields (NUF) to finish off the regular season. Tickets can be purchased online at: Tickets.BYULacrosse.com
