LA CROSSE, Wis. – I received an email from Brian Donovan, the proud father of Michigan State senior All-American pole Patrick Donovan.
A lot of times, emails from parents can be awkward, but Mr. Donovan’s email illuminated some facts that most MCLA teams take for granted, but that those outside of the association may not appreciate.
As part of the Senior Day festivities on Sunday, Donovan the Elder compiled some numbers for the program that illustrates the challenges and opportunities that await MCLA student-athletes.
I’ll let Mr. Donovan’s email do the heavy lifting here:
“This year the [Michigan State] team has already traveled more than 8,500 miles and the total will exceed 12,500 miles if they make it to Salt Lake – the most travel of any of the senior class' four years.
The 2018 Michigan State men's lacrosse team senior class had careers that included:
- Over 40,000 miles traveling to games during the spring season (that's 1.6x the earth's circumference!)
- 64 nights sleeping in hotel or on the bus (over nine weeks!)
- Team members sleep two-to-a-bed and four in a room to save money
- An overall record (up to senior night) of 38-18 (68%)
- An overall CCLA Conference record (up to senior night) of 25-2 (93%)
- Extending the CCLA conference championship winning streak to a record-setting six consecutive seasons
- Extending the team's participation in the MCLA national tournament to eight consecutive seasons

Sierra Sends a Message
No. 10 Sierra Nevada and No. 14 UC Davis had been lining up all season for Sunday's showdown to see who will be the favorite heading into the WCLL-II tournament in a couple of weeks.
The Eagles took all the drama out of any rematch with a complete, 20-3 victory over the Aggies in Tahoe.
Led by Jack Southron six goals and three assists, Sierra jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead and a 12-0 halftime bulge on its way to the comfy win. These two teams will likely meet again, but an 18-goal swing doesn’t seem realistic. We’ll see.
My Top Fives
Division I
1. Chapman (10-0) – I need to know more about the Connecticut-to-Orange pipeline.
2. Utah (10-0) – It’s not official, but I’m going to pencil the Utes into the RMLC tourney.
3. South Carolina (13-0) – The Hokies win just might be an at-large clincher.
4. Colorado (9-1) – Saturday’s game against Utah should be special.
5. Michigan State (10-1) – BYU is lurking for this spot. Could get it this weekend.
The Herd was presented today with the James "Ace" Adams Sportsmanship award for the 2017 season by the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association (NILOA). The James "Ace" Adams Sportsmanship Award is presented annually to the college or university in each of the 11 officiating districts whose coaches, players, and fans exhibit the best sportsmanship throughout the season. #GoBison

1. St. Thomas (8-1) – Like the salmon returning to Capistrano.
2. North Dakota State (7-1) – One of those days? Or did the Herd get exposed?
3. Grand Valley State (5-2) – We’ll learn everything about the Lakers this weekend.
4. Northern Arizona (9-1) – ‘Jacks hurtling toward a showdown with San Marcos.
5. Minn.-Duluth (8-3) – The St. John’s loss let some air out of the Bulldogs balloon.

NOTES: Chico’s win over Dominican on Sunday assured that both Cal and Santa Clara will get one of the four bids to the WCLL D-I tournament…Clemson has qualified for the SELC tourney…Idaho’s win over Oregon State puts Washington and Simon Fraser into the PNCLL tournament field…Washington (Mo.) will play St. Louis on Tuesday to determine the final entrant in the LSA-II field.
