Isaac, Anderson Named Players of Month

Isaac, Anderson Named Players of Month

March 5th, 2020 General News | Montana | South Carolina | Alabama | Cal Poly | California | Dominican | FAU | Loyola Marymount | Northern Arizona | Rice | Texas | Texas State | UT-Dallas | UT-San Antonio

SPARKS, Md. – After putting up solid numbers in February while helping their teams’ push for the postseason, South Carolina’s Derek Isaac and Montana’s Sean Anderson have earned MCLA US Lacrosse Player of the Month honors in their respective division.

Isaac, a junior faceoff specialist, has been superb this year in helping the MCLA Division I defending national champions to race out to an 8-0 opening month. In those eight contests, the Highland, Md., product won 135-of-175 draws (77.1 winning percentage).

He has also grabbed 53 ground balls along with a goal and an assist.

“Derek has been a great leader for us this spring because of his consistent play,” said South Carolina coach James Harkey. “He has continued to improve since his stellar freshman campaign. You know what you'll get out of him day in and day out, and that consistency breeds confidence across the whole team. The ability to have the ball back right after a score or to stop an opponent from building momentum is a valuable weapon. We're thrilled to have Derek in our camp.”

Anderson, a sophomore midfielder, has been a force at both ends of the field for the 5-2 Montana Grizzlies. The Newark, Calif., native has not only helped the defense to a 7.85 goals against average in February, but has also been averaging 3.1 points per game (15g, 7a) despite drawing plenty of attention from opposing defenses.

In matchups against the top two teams in Division II – Minn.-Duluth and St. Thomas – Anderson accounted for nearly half of Montana’s goals.

“Sean has been a tremendous player for us this year,” said Montana coach Tucker Sargent. “He is one of our best players and is a true do-it-all guy. He plays excellent defense, clears the ball for us and is obviously an offensive threat that can score against the best and dish the ball when guys are open. The best part of Sean's game is the energy and enthusiasm he brings and his willingness to do whatever his team needs of him and is always upbeat.”

For their efforts, both Isaac and Anderson will receive a one-year membership to US Lacrosse, the national governing body of the sport. Membership includes on-the-field insurance coverage, discounted tickets and apparel, along with a subscription to US Lacrosse Magazine.
