Cal Poly’s Baquerizo Is Top Goalie

February 8th, 2022 General News | Cal Poly | Florida State

ATLANTA – After leading Cal Poly to a key non-conference ranked road victory on Saturday, senior netminder Tom Baquerizo has been named the PEARL Division I Goalie of the Week for the period ending Feb. 6.

Opening the season with a rough contest against No. 19 USC in Los Angeles, the Mustangs looked for Baquerizo to step up. The San Rafael, Calif., native did just that, turning away 13 shots in the 12-10 victory.

“One of our most improved players from our 2020 squad, it’s great to see Tom developing into the defensive leader and stopper we need to achieve our goals,” said Cal Poly coach Bobby Dabrieo.

“Limiting USC to only 10 goals was a team effort sparked by some difficult saves early on leading to a 6-1 run. The senior wine and viticulture major then made some clutch saves down the stretch, leading the defense to an efficient day of clearing.”

For his efforts in earning the PEARL’s Goalie of the Week, Baquerizo will receive a prize package from Guardian PEARL, a ball that lasts longer than the rest and never greases. Guardian PEARL is the proud partner of the MCLA.

The rookie sparked a comeback for the Seminoles, finishing with 17 stops and just eight goals allowed against Auburn in a 12-8 triumph.
