BYU's Moon Snags Weekly Honors

BYU's Moon Snags Weekly Honors

February 7th, 2017 General News | BYU | Cal Poly | Missouri | Texas A&M | Texas Christian

ATLANTA – In his first collegiate start, Brigham Young freshman goalie Mason Moon guided the Cougars to a comfortable victory over No. 10 Arizona, and for his efforts he earned the MCLA Division I Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour for the period ending Feb. 5.

Picture #1

In the season opener on Friday afternoon in Provo, Moon turned away 13 of the 15 shots he faced, helping No. 6 BYU breeze to a 12-2 victory over the Wildcats. The Frisco, Texas, native allowed one goal in the first quarter, but blanked Arizona in the second and third, allowing the Cougars to build an insurmountable lead.

“As you can imagine, being a freshman in your first collegiate start as a goalie is a big deal,” said BYU coach Matt Schneck. “Mason led the team with confidence from the very beginning. The first shot on goal took a few minutes into the first quarter before it happened, but once it did and Mason made his first save, there was a ton of excitement from the sideline.”

For his efforts in earning the Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour, Moon will receive a new Under Armour Command Head – a $100 value. Under Armour is the proud sponsor of the MCLA.

Under Armour Honor Roll

Auggie Buerkle, Soph. – Texas A&M
In an important LSA South division contest on Friday, Buerkle scored six goals and set up a seventh, helping the Aggies knock off Texas State, 15-11. He had two goals and two helpers in a follow-up game with D-II UT-San Antonio.

Noah Iverson, Soph. – Missouri
The Tigers opened their Division I slate with a non-conference victory over Illinois State and Iverson factored in nine of the team’s 15 goals with two markers and seven dimes. In a warm-up game against D-II Missouri S&T, Iverson chipped in three goals and six assists.

Sean Pihl, Sr. – Cal Poly
In the WCLL opener, Pihl made 12 saves to preserve a 12-6 victory against Santa Clara on Saturday. He also chipped in with three ground balls and – perhaps most impressively – scored the first goal of the game for the Mustangs.

Nicholas Vreeburg, Senior – Texas Christian
The Horned Frogs rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Auburn, 13-11, on Saturday thanks to five goals and an assist from Vreeburg.
