Recap: Freaky Friday

February 24th, 2018 Opinion | Arizona State | Cal Poly | Chapman | Georgia Tech | Grand Canyon | UC Santa Barbara | Arizona | Dominican | Liberty | Tennessee | Utah Valley

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Are you not entertained?!?

I certainly was. After my Lenten fish fry duties had ceased last night, I hunkered down to watch both the No. 1 and No. 3 ranked teams survive overtime while four extra sessions were not so kind to No. 5.

As if those results weren’t dramatic enough, Brayden Holzer and Alex Wilson notched hat tricks helping unranked Boise State topple No. 13 Oregon in Eugene. Also, No. 23 Texas A&M and No. 21 Florida State went on a roller-coaster ride with the Seminoles handing the Aggies their first loss, 15-14.

I didn’t verbalize it anywhere, but I thought Chapman might work over Georgia Tech with the Wreck dealing with multiple key injuries. After the first quarter with the Panthers up 4-1, I figured I was spot on.

Nope.

The Yellow Jackets figured some things out and steadily regained their footing. A late goal sent the two teams to overtime where Chapman struck with nifty move off a crease roll.

What a finish. @chapmanlax downs @GaTechLAX in overtime 11-10. Here is the game winner. Great showcase of two of the best the @MCLA has to offer. pic.twitter.com/BFmquuHQP3

Check out a replay of the entire contest.

Ken Lovic’s troops will have to rebound quickly as they play Boston College at the A-Town Shootout this afternoon in a game that will be streamed on the Tech’s YouTube channel.

Leading 3-0 to start the game, top-ranked Grand Canyon looked like it might run away from No. 11 Cal Poly, but similar to Georgia Tech, the Mustangs settled in and turned the contest into one of their signature grinders.

The lead was trimmed to 4-3 at half and some late game heroics managed to push the contest into overtime. It was there that GCU All-American Cam Wengreniuk went to work.

It was Cam Wengreniuk of Top-ranked @gculacrosse who bulled his way to 14 yards and buried the overtime game-winner to beat No. 11 @calpolylacrosse on Friday night. #mcla18 #lopesrising #RaceforSaltLake

I’ve already seen a couple of social media posts saying there was a ward prior to the shot. That's a garden variety bull-dodge from my perspective. And it's not like Wengreniuk's move got him a dunk. That was a 14-yard laser.

In No. 5 Arizona State’s loss to No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, both goalies put on a show in the 8-7 Gauchos victory. The SLC went with Peter Brydon as the Player of the Game in its SLC Game of the Week.

The result helps UCSB far more than it hurts the Sun Devils. We’re not even in March and the Gauchos have a signature win they can lean on during selection time.

ODDS & ENDS: No. 25 Arizona doubled up UNLV, 16-8 in Sin City…Florida’s victory over Central Florida is a biggie. The Gators now have the inside track on one of the two divisional bids to the SELC tourney…Liberty breezed to its divisional opener over Tennessee… Oklahoma against SMU today is a rematch of the ’17 LSA championship game…Simon Fraser’s game with Idaho got snowed out last night and will be made up today at 1 p.m. PST...the No. 4 BYU vs. No. 8 Cal game will be streamed live at 2 p.m. PST...it didn't involve ranked teams, but Dominican and Utah Valley played a double-overtime thriller of their own with the Penguins pulling out an 11-10 win.
