ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Sonoma State topped the Penguins of Dominican 13-11 on Friday afternoon, moving the Seawolves to 2-1 in WCLL play and 5-6 on the year.

The Penguins opened the scoring with an early transition goal, but the Seawolves answered. A back-and-forth first quarter ended in a 4-4 tie.

The Seawolves got off to a hot start to begin the second quarter, scoring four unanswered goals moving to an 8-4 lead.

Dominican was able to get one before the break, leaving Sonoma with an 8-5 halftime lead.

Sonoma State opened the third quarter with two goals of its own for a 10-5 edge, but the Penguins would not be left out of the party.

Dominican closed the third quarter with four goals of its own and it was 10-9 going into the fourth.

At the start of the fourth, the Seawolves got the first goal to lead 11-9, but Dominican would answer with two more to knot the game at 11.

Sonoma State would get two more late into the fourth quarter to regain a 13-11 lead and were able to kill off the rest of the game.

"I am proud of how the team battled through adversity to get the win," said Sonoma coach Panchito Ojeda. "League games are incredibly tough and Dominican was a good challenge for our squad. After some rest we now move on to Cal."

The Seawolves were led on the field by strong goaltending from keeper Andrew Moore (5 saves and 3 GAA) and on the field by Joey Piombo (3g, 2a).

Sonoma returns to action when it hosts No. 20 Cal Bears on Saturday at 2 p.m.
