SALT LAKE CITY – After Division II went mostly chalk, it didn’t take long for Division I to find its first upset at the 2018 MCLA National Championships powered by Under Armour.

No. 13 California (12-5) d. No. 4 Colorado (11-5), 15-11
For the second time in Division I tournament history a No. 13 seed has defeated a No. 4 as Cal stunned Colorado, 15-11. No. 13 Northeastern downed No. 4 Michigan in 2007.

Brendan Cook paced the Golden Bears with four goals, helping Cal build an 8-3 lead at halftime. John Roche had four goals and two helpers for the Buffaloes, who managed to cut the lead to 10-7 at the end of three quarters.

Cal had all the answers in the fourth quarter to solidify the upset.

Nick Beattie was outstanding between the pipes for the Bears, posting 11 saves. Russell Riley had 13 stops in the losing effort.

No. 1 Chapman (14-0) d. No. 16 Indiana (10-3), 12-6
For 30 minutes, Indiana toyed with the biggest upset in MCLA history, holding a 5-3 lead at halftime over top-seeded Chapman.

The Panthers managed to rally behind five goals and an assist from Wiley Bonham, rallying to take an 8-5 lead after three periods. A 4-1 fourth quarter sealed the deal for Chapman.

Brian Mark led the Hoosiers with a pair of goals while Indiana netminder Chad Balek was superb, finishing with 19 saves.

No. 2 Utah (16-0) d. No. 15 Texas A&M (11-4), 20-7
Josh Stout and Jake Stout combined for five goals and three assists to pace a powerful offensive effort for Utah as they rolled past the Aggies.

The lead was 5-0 after the first before A&M responded to cut the margin to 8-4 at the break. Another 5-0 run by the Utes put the contest away.

A.J. Hepting and Auggie Buerkle had a pair of goals each in the loss.

No. 3 Michigan State (15-1) d. No. 14 Oregon (7-7), 16-8
Bennett Osterink scored six goals, helping Michigan State methodically pull away from Oregon in a 16-8 triumph.

After taking a 4-1 lead in the first, the Spartans slowly built the lead that the Ducks couldn’t threaten.

Kevin Boland only had to make five saves for the win while Sam Snider was solid, turning away 17 shots. Cade Bailey led the Ducks with a hat trick.
