Cal’s Beattie Named Goalie of Week

Cal’s Beattie Named Goalie of Week

April 16th, 2019 General News | California | Illinois State | Oregon | Sonoma State | Texas

ATLANTA – After stonewalling the Golden Bears archrival in “The Big Game,” California netminder Nick Beattie has been named Pearl’s MCLA Division I Goalie of the Week for the period ending April 14.

Squaring off with No. 17 Stanford on Saturday evening in Palo Alto, the Winter Park, Fla., product turned away 16 shots (69.6 sv%) in Cal’s 15-7 victory that kept the Bears undefeated on the season.

Beattie has started every game for Cal, posting a 12-0 record with a 60.8 save percentage and a goals against average of 7.50.

"Nick is a captain, team president, the hardest worker on the team and cares a ton about Cal lacrosse,” said Cal coach Ned Webster. “He'd be the first to give credit to the defense for forcing shots he can handle, but he's also overly humble because there were a few careless roll-backs we gave up to the middle of the field and Nick bailed us out.

“Our offense has been clicking, but 'defense wins championships' is the truth and we're thankful Nick is our last line of defense as we head into the playoffs."

For his efforts in earning the Pearl’s Performance of the Week, Beattie will receive a prize package from Guardian Pearl, a ball that lasts longer than the rest and never greases. Guardian Pearl is the proud partner of the MCLA.

In a big, intrastate battle, the Bloomington, Ill., product made 18 saves (72.0 sv%) to lead the Redbirds to an 8-7 victory over Illinois.

Andrew Moore, Soph. – Sonoma State
In a must-win game to qualify for the postseason, Moore made 20 saves (62.5 sv%) to help the Seawolves edge Chico State, 13-12, in overtime.

Sam Snider, Sr. – Oregon
With the second seed in the PNCLL tournament on the line, the team captain stepped up, making 16 saves in the Ducks’ 14-9 victory over Boise State.
