Sonoma’s Piombo Posts Top Performance

ATLANTA – He led the Seawolves to a stunning upset in the first round of the WCLL tournament and now Sonoma State junior midfielder Joey Piombo has the Division I Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour for the period ending April 21.

With Sonoma visiting No. 17 Stanford in hopes of keep its nationals hopes alive, the Danville, Calif., product was huge. He scored five goals and set up a sixth as the Seawolves pulled out a dramatic, 15-14 victory in overtime.

Sonoma trailed by a goal late, but Piombo struck for his fifth goal with just six seconds remaining to send the game into extra time.

“Joey had an incredible game, including the game tying goal to send the game into overtime,” said Sonoma State coach Panchito Ojeda. “I love Joey's heart and how he represents the blue-collar culture here at Sonoma State.”

For his efforts in earning the Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour, Piombo will receive a new Under Armour Command Head – a $100 value. Under Armour is the proud sponsor of the MCLA.

Under Armour Honor Roll

Tanner Jones, Sr. – Concordia-Irvine
The Eagles advanced to the SLC semifinals with a 15-9 victory over USC and Jones led the way with a career high six goals.

Carson Pakula, Jr. – Central Michigan
In a loss to Western Michigan, Pakula struck for a hat trick, making him the fastest player to notch 100 career points in program history.

Chace Quezada, Jr. – Western Michigan
In a huge rivalry win over Central Michigan, the attackman tied a career high in points (7) and set new career mark for assists (5).

Trey Robinson, Soph. – Auburn
The Tigers won their huge rivalry game with Alabama thanks to Robinson, who went 13-of-15 on faceoffs (86.7%) while also potting a goal.

Sam Weis, Soph. – South Carolina
In the Gamecocks narrow win over archrival Clemson, Weis set career highs in points (8) and goals (7) in the 11-10 triumph. He added another goal in the win over NC State.
