PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young men’s lacrosse coach Matt Schneck announced the captains for the 2020 season. Nominated by players and coaches, Tyler Mumford, Tyler Clancy and Jared Kotter were selected to represent the Cougars

Tyler Mumford, an Anthem, Ariz., native, is majoring in Exercise Science. Mumford served a two-year LDS mission in Suva, Fiji. The senior was a first team all-RMLC pick on defense team in 2019. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound defenseman has played in 38 career games for the Cougars, dating back to his first season in 2015.

“My goal for the season is nothing less than to be the best team in the nation," said Mumford. "I believe that we have the talent and ability to do it.”

Tyler Clancy is a face off specialist who will graduate December 2020 in Family Life and pursue a career in Law Enforcement. The senior won 135-of-196 faceoffs in 2019, which is a career best. Clancy, returning for his fourth year, has played in 39 career games for the Cougars and has won 65.6% of his face-offs.

The 5-foot-8, 195-pound native of Beaufort, S.C., earned first team all-RMLC honors in 2019. He was also chosen as a second team all-conference and Honorable Mention All-America faceoff specialist in 2018.

“There aren't appropriate words to describe it," said Clancy of his BYU experience. "I joined the program as a teenager with a lot of entitlement. As a freshman, waking up every morning at 5 a.m. to get knocked around and outworked helped me build the character I needed to grow and mature as a man. Looking back on my time here, I am grateful to have been taught about discipline, hard work, and accountability. I will take the lessons I've learned playing out on North University Field with me wherever life leads.”

Jared Kotter, a local talent from Spanish Fork, Utah, is an Advertising major who is scheduled to graduate in April 2021. Kotter served an LDS mission in Guadalajara, Mexico, speaking Spanish for two years.

The senior captain, in his fourth season, has starred for the Cougars in 47 career games. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound defenseman posted his best numbers in 2019 with 25 ground balls and three assists in 15 games. He received honorable mention all-conference honors in 2019.

“I grew up watching BYU lacrosse, dreaming of wearing that jersey and stepping on to that field. Now as a senior captain, it is an incredible honor,” Kotter said. “There is nothing more meaningful to me than having earned that respect from the people that I work alongside of every day.”

“I am thrilled with the selection of our 2020 captains," Schneck said. "Long before they were nominated by teammates and coaches, they were leading and doing all of the things you would hope for from an effective leader. They each possess unique qualities that will enhance the overall culture and success of the team. Tyler, Tyler and Jared join an elite group of past BYU lacrosse captains that have led the Cougars to on field and off field success.”

Schneck (BYU ‘97, GWU ‘02) leads the Cougars for the 11th season, posting a career record of 147-49 with 68 MCLA All-Americans and 123 all-conference recipients in the past ten seasons. Schneck and the Cougars look to forward to another successful season.
