Brigham Young Captures Invitational Win

Brigham Young Captures Invitational Win

May 14th, 2021 General News | BYU | Chapman

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Brigham Young outscored Chapman 14-5 over the final three quarters to rally from an early deficit and win the 2021 MCLA Invitational, 16-9, at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex on Friday morning.

The win caps a 12-1 season for the Cougars and avenges the only loss of the season – a 6-5 setback to the Panthers in Orange, Calif., on April 12.

After spotting BYU the first goal of the contest, Chapman responded with a four-goal run that appeared to put them in control of the game. The Cougars would get one back before the first break to trim the lead to 4-2.

From there on out, the Brigham Young defense and goalie Mason Moon put the clamps on Chapman.

The Cougars blanked the talented Panther offense in the second quarter while racking up four goals, heading into the halftime intermission with a 6-4 advantage.

BYU scored five goals in each of the last two quarters to slowly pull away as Chapman could not solve the Cougar backline.

Jake Halversen scored a game-high five goals to earn PEARL Player of the Game honors while Seth Garff tacked on four of his own. Moon turned away 11 Chapman shots in cage.

Tyler Clancy did solid work at the faceoff dot, winning 15-of-26 draws.

Fran Bonadies notched a hat trick and dished out an assist in the losing effort while Garrett Stemmler added two markers. Three Panther goalies combined for 12 saves.
