Cal Poly’s Chu Named PEARL Honoree

Cal Poly’s Chu Named PEARL Honoree

March 12th, 2024 General News | Cal Poly | California | Purdue | Texas | Utah Valley

ATLANTA – He guided Cal Poly to a pair of conference victories, earning Mustang Lucas Chu the MCLA Division PEARL Goalie of the Week for the period ending March 10.

Cal Poly opened the weekend with a road trip to Sonoma State on Saturday and Chu helped the Mustangs record the victory. He made nine saves – 56.3 save percentage – while scooping up a ground ball and even dishing out an assist in the 16-8 triumph.

After a quick turnaround, Cal Poly returned to SLO for a home game against Stanford. The Morristown, N.J., netminder recorded 14 saves (73.7 sv%) as the Mustangs posted a 14-5 win.

He also gobbled up a pair of ground balls, helping to propel Cal Poly to a tie atop the WCLL Division I standings.

"Lucas has been the backbone of our entire team all season long,” said Cal Poly coach Morgan Weireter. “Knowing that we can depend on him to make those early saves really gets everyone fired up.

“This weekend was pretty intense with a bus ride to Sonoma starting at 5 a.m. and not getting home till 9 p.m., and then having to play another game the next day at home. The boys were pretty exhausted. But there was Lucas, bringing everyone up with his energy and focus, ready to compete no matter the circumstances."

"Lucas is an incredible goalie, making several point-blank saves throughout the weekend. We see it every day in practice just how good he is, and to see his hard work pay off this season is something to be proud of."

For winning the PEARL Goalie of the Week honor, Chu will receive a PEARL swag bag of goodies that will include PEARL lacrosse balls – the official ball of the MCLA.
